Nobody really talks about the hardest part of becoming who you’re meant to be.
It’s not the beginning.
And it’s not the ending.
It’s the messy middle.
That strange, uncomfortable space where you’ve outgrown what was… but you have absolutely no idea what comes next.
You’re not where you used to be.
But you’re not where you want to be either.
And sometimes, you wonder…
Am I actually moving forward… or am I just lost?
I think most of us have lived in that space.
Maybe you’re changing careers.
Maybe you’re starting over.
Maybe a relationship has ended.
Maybe your children have grown up and suddenly the house feels different.
Maybe you’re building something new.
Or maybe nothing dramatic has happened at all…
You just woke up one morning and realised,
This life doesn’t quite fit me anymore.
And that can be a very lonely feeling.
Because from the outside, everything might look perfectly fine.
But inside, you’re somewhere between letting go and holding on.
Between who you were…
and who you’re becoming.
I once heard a story about a woman who planted a garden.
She watered it every morning.
She pulled out the weeds.
She moved things around.
And for weeks…
nothing seemed to happen.
She began wondering if she had planted anything at all.
Then one morning, she noticed a tiny green shoot pushing through the soil.
And what struck me about the story wasn’t that something finally grew.
It was this:
All those weeks when she thought nothing was happening… something was happening.
It was just happening where she couldn’t see it.
And I think life is like that sometimes.
We are so impatient with ourselves because we can’t see the progress.
We think,
I should have figured this out by now.
I should be happier by now.
I should know what I’m doing.
Everyone else seems to have moved ahead.
But perhaps we’re judging a season of our life by what is visible…
when the most important work is happening underneath.
There’s a beautiful line by poet David Whyte:
“There is no path that goes all the way.”
I love that.
Because we keep waiting for the path to become clear.
We want the five-year plan.
The certainty.
The sign.
The guarantee that if we take this next step, everything will work out.
But life rarely gives us that.
Sometimes it gives us one step.
And then another.
And sometimes…
nothing but fog.
And maybe the messy middle isn’t a mistake.
Maybe it’s a necessary part of becoming.
Think about a caterpillar.
There is a point where it completely breaks down inside the cocoon.
It isn’t halfway to being a butterfly.
It doesn’t look beautiful.
It doesn’t look successful.
It looks like a mess.
And yet…
that mess is transformation.
Maybe some seasons of our lives are like that.
The relationship that ended.
The job that didn’t work out.
The dream that changed.
The friendship you outgrew.
The version of yourself you had to leave behind.
At the time, it feels like something is being taken away from you.
But sometimes…
something is being made room for.
And I wish we were kinder to ourselves in those seasons.
Because we are so quick to call ourselves failures when perhaps we are simply unfinished.
We don’t call a book a failure because we’re only on chapter six.
We don’t look at a painting halfway through and say,
“Well, that’s terrible. Throw it away.”
We understand that it isn’t finished.
So why do we expect ourselves to have the whole picture while we’re still living it?
Maybe you’re listening to this today and you’re in your messy middle.
You don’t know what’s next.
You’re tired of starting over.
You’re tired of being patient.
You’re tired of hearing, “Everything happens for a reason.”
Because honestly…
sometimes you don’t want a reason.
Sometimes you just want someone to say,
“I know this is hard.”
So let me say that.
I know this is hard.
And you don’t have to have it all figured out today.
You don’t have to turn every setback into a lesson immediately.
You don’t have to be grateful for everything that hurt you.
You don’t have to pretend you’re okay when you’re not.
You can simply keep going.
Quietly.
Imperfectly.
One day at a time.
Because maybe the goal isn’t to have a perfect life.
Maybe it’s to become more fully ourselves while we’re living it.
And perhaps one day, when you look back at this strange, uncertain chapter…
you’ll realise that this was the chapter where you became braver.
Softer.
Wiser.
More honest.
More yourself.
You just couldn’t see it while you were inside it.
So if you’re somewhere between the life you had…
and the life you’re trying to build…
take a breath.
You’re not behind.
You’re not broken.
You’re not failing.
You’re in the middle.
And the middle is messy.
But it is also where so much of life happens.
Where we let go.
Where we grow.
Where we begin again.
And where, quietly…
without even knowing it…
we become someone we haven’t met yet.
So don’t rush through this chapter just because you don’t like how it feels.
Stay.
Breathe.
Take the next small step.
Trust what you cannot see yet.
Because sometimes…
the life you’re waiting for is already taking root beneath the surface.
You just haven’t seen the green shoot yet.
And that’s okay.
Keep watering.
Your story isn’t over.
You’re simply…
in the messy middle.
